Chromolithographic poster ‘Boro', 1892

This poster depicts a footballing scene in front of the Houses of Parliament and the Palace of Westminster. It was published in Middlesbrough and carries a political message about the parliamentary borough of Middlesbrough, probably from June 1892.

Middlesbrough had been Liberal since 1867, but this was challenged by political opponents in the 1874 and 1880 elections. This poster illustrates the situation before the 1892 poll, when the Liberals were ‘still unbeaten' but challenged by both independent Labour and Liberal Unionist candidates. The goalkeeper depicts the official Liberal W S Robson deflecting shots from his two rival contestants: J H Wilson (independent labour) and H Bell (Liberal Unionist).

The official Liberal W S Robson was defeated in the poll by J H Wilson (subsequently considered a Lib/Lab member) who won by a majority of 629.
