Participants in the National FE Football+ Trophy Tournament in 2006

Community Projects

Developing Football for All

As part of the National Football Museum 's work with local communities we have launched the ‘Developing Football for All' programme. The programme aims to promote and celebrate the involvement of diverse communities and people of all abilities in football.

Current activities and events taking place at the Museum as part of the programme include:

The National FE Football+ Trophy Tournament

The National Football Museum, in partnership with the KickOff@FE initiative and the University of Central Lancashire, in 2006 hosted the first National FE Football+ Trophy Tournament, for young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. Following the success of 2006's inaugural tournament, which involved teams representing Chelsea, Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers, Everton and Wigan Athletic, in 2007 12 teams from FE Colleges across the UK took part in the tournament which was held at Preston Sports Arena on 26 June. Winning teams came from Norwich City and Kidderminster Harriers. For the second year, the National Football Museum was the main sponsor of the event and hosted the medal ceremony at the museum.

In May 2007 Sir Trevor Brooking launched the programme for the year at Chelsea's new training ground on behalf of the Football Association.

In 2008 the tournament became even bigger with young women taking part for the first time with three tournaments - two held in London on 7 and 9 May, with the third taking place in Preston on 17 June.

For 2009 the tournament has grown again and is now the largest disability football tournament in the country. Events across the country will include a tournament at Preston Sports Arena on 16 June 2009.

Previous activities:

Since the Museum opened in 2001 it has used the power of football to work with a whole range of diverse audiences. Here are three examples:

Barclays Young Peoples Project

In 2005/06 with the help of Barclays more than 5,000 young people from disadvantaged local areas were able to participate in a range of exciting activities at the Museum.
