Community Projects
Developing Football for All
As part of the National Football Museum 's work with local communities we have launched the ‘Developing Football for All' programme. The programme aims to promote and celebrate the involvement of diverse communities and people of all abilities in football.
Current activities and events taking place at the Museum as part of the programme include:
The National FE Football+ Trophy Tournament
The National Football Museum, in partnership with the KickOff@FE initiative and the University of Central Lancashire, in 2007 hosted the second National FE Football+ Trophy Tournament, for young adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. Following the success of 2006's inaugural tournament, which involved teams representing Chelsea, Manchester United, Bolton Wanderers, Everton and Wigan Athletic, in 2007 12 teams from FE Colleges across the UK took part in the tournament which was held at Preston Sports Arena on 26 June. Winning teams came from Norwich City and Kidderminster Harriers. For the second year, the National Football Museum was the main sponsor of the event and hosted the medal ceremony at the museum.
In May 2007 Sir Trevor Brooking launched the programme for the year at Chelsea's new training ground on behalf of the Football Association.
In 2008 the tournament will get even bigger with young women taking part for the first time. To reflect is growing scale this year two tournaments will be held in London on 7 and 9 May, with the third taking place in Preston on 17 June.
Queering the Pitch: Football in the Gay Community
As part of the National Football Museum 's on-going ‘Developing Football for All' initiative, the museum is working with the University of Central Lancashire on a project looking at football in the gay community.
The project will aim to make links with the cultural programme of the 2008 International Gay and Lesbian Football Association World Championships which will be hosted by London in August.
The project is based on previous research undertaken at the University of Central Lancashire, entitled, ‘Queering the Pitch', and will look at the history of football in the gay community as well as contemporary issues and homophobia in football.
