Community Projects
One Aim, One Game
A film about football and friendship in Deepdale
The One Aim – One Game film-making project was a youth project delivered by the National Football Museum in partnership with the Youth and Community Service in Preston during 2006. The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund Young Roots Scheme.
The aim of the project was to work with a group of young Asian women to research and produce a short interactive film, which would go on display at the Museum. The film explores the history of women's football and the area of Deepdale, but also looks more generally at the involvement of Muslim girls in the game of football.
The young people involved in the project were aged between 13 and 16 and all live in the Deepdale area of Preston, in which the Museum is based. The group attended weekly sessions at the National Football Museum , where they worked with a number of creative professionals to learn new skills such as film making, animation and drumming. They also had the opportunity to explore the Museum's collections relating to the history of women's football.
To create the film the group went out into their local community to interview residents of Deepdale about football in their area and record their opinions about women playing football. They also attended a professional women's football match, where they interviewed England goalkeeper Rachel Brown, and were invited to the men's international between England and Hungary at Old Trafford. The group also took part in a focus group at the Football Association in London, where they were invited to give their opinions about Asian women in football.
The film was successfully launched at the National Football Museum in November 2006. This red-carpet event was very well attended by the families and friends of the project participants, along with a number of local dignitaries, including the Deputy Mayor of Preston, Councillor Bhikhu Patel and representatives from the Football Association and the ‘Let's Kick Racism out of Football', anti-racism campaign.
The project has been hugely successful for the Museum, attracting significant media interest and allowing the Museum to develop excellent links with the local Asian community. The film gives an engaging and funny insight into the involvement of young Asian women in football and challenges many of the media stereotypes surrounding young Muslims in Britain. The project participants were: Zenab Ahmad, Fatima Member, Nadia Musa, Fhemeeda Patel, Mumtaz Patel, Sitara Patel, Tasneem Patel, Kamilah Ralph, Tashnim Secretary, Nasrin Selant.
