Steve Johnson has led the disability football programme at Everton In The Community (EITC) since joining EITC in 2003. Having lost his leg in an accident whilst playing football in 1985, Steve thought his football playing days were over. Fortunately, he was soon to discover Amputee Football, a sport still very much in its infancy back then; this soon re-ignited his love for the ‘beautiful game'. From such horrendous circumstances Steve has managed to turn his life around through the power of football and since his call up to the England team in 1988 has never looked back, going on to achieve over 130 international caps, win 3 World Cups, and been voted ‘World Amputee Footballer of the Year' in 1999. During the 2005 World Cup in Brazil , whilst captaining his country, Steve was invited to become President of the World Amputee Football Federation, a position formerly held until re-election this year. Steve has also represented Great Britain in volleyball at two Paralympic games, in Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.
Lord Triesman, Chairman of the FA, said: “I passionately believe that football is for everyone. Steve is a fantastic role model for all young people interested in football.”
The Football For All award is given jointly by the National Football Museum and the Football Association to a player who has excelled in an aspect of disability football.
