Living legend George Best visits The National Football Museum
Football legend George Best visited today to present his recently auctioned 1968 European Footballer of the Year Award to The National Football Museum.
The ex-Manchester United and Northern Ireland hero was delighted to learn that his much-deserved 1968 European Footballer of the Year trophy is to be displayed at The Museum. He had feared it would be lost to the English public if bought by an overseas collector.
Luckily the buyer of the trophy, a North West football fan, saw the importance of the piece staying within the region. To save our shared football heritage, he kindly offered to loan the object to The Museum for the general public to enjoy.
George combined his visit with the presentation of his Hall of Fame trophy, following his induction into The Museum's Hall of Fame in 2002. He was clearly delighted to be acknowledged as one of the greatest players in English football history.
Spokesman at The National Football Museum, Mark Bushell, said:
“Best was the genuine article. In a time when the words ‘genius' and ‘world class' are embarrassingly overused, Best was both.”
