Two attendees at The National Football Museum Hall of Fame Award Dinner, on November 4th last year, have had the incredible experience of spending a day with BBC's Match of the Day team before watching the live broadcast of the programme from the studio Gallery.
Michael Botes put his hand in his pocket to the tune of £1,700, at the Charity auction held at the Reebok stadium, to secure the day for himself and guest, Paul Leatherland.
Chaperone for the day, Mark Bushell, from the Museum explained:
“The guys had an unbelievable day. Starting at 2pm they visited the editing suites, saw all the live games coming in and then witnessed final score being presented from the studios before watching how Match of the Day was put together. The day finished at midnight after the Match of the Day broadcast had been completed. They both kept saying to me “This is unreal” and it was”
Michael, from Fulwood, was delighted with the insight into the iconic programme:
“We watched Gary Lineker record the adverts that go out before Match of the Day and then watched the programme itself. You cannot begin to imagine how complex the whole process is and how good Lineker, Lawrenson and Hansen are. Lineker writes all his own script and the speed he can adapt it to suit different shots was amazing.”
Michael and Paul also took the opportunity to relax with the three presenters prior to the live broadcast and to discuss the weekend's games. Michael said:
“It was definitely a once in a lifetime experience and one that is difficult to explain to people.”
Bushell was pleased to meet up with Lineker again saying:
“ Gary has yet to attend our Hall of Fame event and we have yet to present him with his Hall of Fame Induction award. But he did promise me that he would attend this year's event if he was available. Last year, unfortunately, our event was held on his birthday.”
