Tribute to a Legend

2006 sees the 60th anniversary of Sir Tom Finney's Preston North End league debut.

To mark this historical achievement The National Football Museum commissioned a huge 15ft x 10ft flag, kindly donated by supporterflags.co.uk, adorned with a picture of Sir Tom and a message of ‘thanks for the memories'.

Visitors to the museum were encouraged to sign this tribute to Sir Tom and in doing so played their own part in acknowledging his wonderful career.

In a competition, four lucky people were chosen at random from the many who signed the flag, to present it to Sir Tom on the game on 31 October between Preston North End v Leeds United at half time. Leeds were the first opponents Sir Tom faced all those years ago.

The competition winners (from left to right in the photo) were: Sally Smith, Rosie Tattersall, John Robinson and Mike Thompson.

The flag has now been added to the museum's collections as a lasting tribute to the legend
