VIP's turn out for exhibition launch
The museum’s latest temporary exhibition kicked off with a sparkling launch event recently.
The launch of ‘Jumpers for Goalposts’ which aims to recapture those first footballing memories attracted a VIP gathering including Sir Tom Finney, Gordon Taylor - Chief Executive of the PFA, top referee Mark Halsey and leading sports artist Paul Trevillion. Paul, who drew football hero Roy of the Rovers in the 1960’s is also famous for the iconic ‘You are the Ref’ column which has appeared in Shoot magazine, various national newspapers and most recently on the BBC website during Euro 2008. He officially opened the exhibition by recalling his own memories of playing football in the park as a child. A lifelong Spurs fan, he remembered how Spurs players would stop to watch him and his friends and how they would occasionally join in. He also kept the invited audience entertained with an impromptu drawing of the legendary Pele!
Museum Director Kevin Moore commented ‘The launch event was a great success and it was really good of Paul to take the time to travel up to Preston, He has met and drawn many of footballs great heroes and it was a real honour for us to welcome him here’.
Alexander Jackson the curator behind Jumpers for Goalposts.said: ‘As a child I loved anything and everything to do with football. I was looking through some of my old comics and football cards and the memories came flooding back. This was really the inspiration for putting it together. If you remember gluing your Subbuteo striker back together or eagerly anticipating the next instalment of Roy of the Rovers, then this exhibition is for you’.
The exhibition was made possible by a grant from the Foundation for Sports and the Arts and has been produced in partnership with the Institute of Northern Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University.
Jumpers for Goalposts continues until Sunday 8 March 2009.
