Lions roar into the museum

The Lisbon Lions paid a flying visit to the National Football Museum recently to meet fans, sign autographs and pose for photos.

Seven of the eight surviving members of the legendary Celtic team, who were the first British team to win the European Cup (in 1967) were met by a sea of green and white shirts as supporters travelled from far and wide to meet their heroes.

Captain Billy McNeil was joined by goalscorers Tommy Gemmill and Stevie Chalmers, right back Jim Craig, inside left Bertie Auld and outside left Bobby Lennox. Inside right Willie Wallace who now lives in Australia was a surprise last minute addition to the line up.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the team had to unfortunately leave earlier than planned. However staff at the museum got them to sign some extra photos which were snapped up by visitors unfortunate enough to miss them.

Museum manager David Pearson commented ‘The Lions visit was extremely popular and it took them a long time to get out of the door as people kept stopping them to pose for photos which they were all very happy to do.  It was a shame that they had to leave earlier than planned. Unfortunately this was completely out of our control and we hope that our visitors were not too disappointed.  We hope to be running similar events with other players in the not too distant future'.
