Talented London Teenage Footballers visit the Museum

A group of talented footballing teenagers paid a flying visit to Lancashire on 2 August 2007, courtesy of the National Football Museum. The thirty strong group are all from the Broadwater Estate, London and play for Broadwater United, a team set up by Community Worker Clasford Stirling over ten years ago in response to the estate's troubled history.

The trip followed on from discussions with David Lammy, former Minister for Culture, now Minister for Skills and MP for Tottenham, which includes the Broadwater Farm estate.

Clasford Stirling, who has just been awarded an MBE for his work with the group, said ‘Football has been the tool in getting these kids off the street; sport has turned the estate around. Many of these kids have gone on to play football at a professional and premiership level. They all work really hard and this is a great way of thanking them for all their dedication. We hope we can continue to forge links with the National Football Museum '.

Kevin Moore, Museum Director commented ‘When we met with David Lammy MP earlier in the year, he was very interested in the work we did with our local community. He put us in touch with the group in his constituency and this trip is the result. We also hope that a group of teenagers from Preston will enjoy a reciprocal visit at some time in the near future'.
