Governor of the Bank of England visits the National Football Museum

The National Football Museum was delighted to welcome the Governor of the Bank of England, Mr Mervyn King, to the Museum on 28th March, 2007. Mr King was in Lancashire for a series of meetings and took the opportunity of a meeting in Preston to visit the Museum. Mr King toured the Museum with Kevin Moore, Museum Director and Sir Tom Finney. Mr King was photographed with Sir Tom holding the oldest surviving FA Cup Trophy, which has very kindly been loaned to the Museum by Mr David Gold, Chairman of Birmingham City Football Club. As a supporter of Aston Villa, Mr King found a great deal of material in the Museum relating to his team,  Aston Villa being one of the founder members of the world's oldest football league in 1888. Mr King commented:

“This fascinating museum shows how the history of football and Britain evolved from the amateur game of the mid-nineteenth century to the international and financial success of today. It helps explain how the changes in the game of football mirrored those in our society.”
