HISTORIC CUP TIE TO BE RE-ENACTED AT PRESTON NORTH END DEEPDALE STADIUM
Two football teams are set to recreate a historic match one hundred and twenty years after the event. In October 1887 Preston North End scored the most goals ever achieved in a competitive game in English football history when they defeated Hyde FC 26-0 in the first round of the FA Cup.
To mark the 120th anniversary of the game, the two teams will meet again on Sunday 18 November at Preston 's Deepdale Stadium. The match, in aid of charity will feature ex-players from both teams. To help recreate the atmosphere of 1887 the players have agreed to wear replica kits from the period. The winning team will be presented with the FA Cup trophy, kindly being loaned for the day by the Football Association.
Top referee Uriah Rennie will keep the players in line on the day. Team members are still being finalised but will include ex PNE players Lee Ashcroft, Ian Bryson and Andy Mcateer. Mark Hendrick, MP for Preston has confirmed as a player for Preston North End.
The Hyde team will include club president, Stalybridge & Hyde MP and Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, James Purnell. Also playing for Hyde will be Lee Cartwright and Mike Flynn, who were previously favourites at Preston North End, and Steve Waywell, the current Hyde United Manager. George Oghani, a record goalscorer for Hyde is expected to play. Northwest Regional Development Agency Chief Executive Steven Broomhead is also expected to play.
Prior to the game the players will be presented to Sir Tom Finney and Lord Pendry, President of the Football Foundation. Lord Pendry co-ordinated a similar game to mark the centenary of this fixture when he was MP for Stalybridge and Hyde. The winners will be presented with the FA Cup trophy, on loan from the Football Association for the day.
The National Football Museum will hold a reception for the two teams after the match and present the winning team with a specially commissioned anniversary trophy and medals for all the players.
Spectators and players will be able to see a display about the history of the game in the Museum and to play the Museum's popular Goal-striker game, with all proceeds also going to the named charity, Sir Tom Finney's Alzheimer Appeal.
James Purnell MP said: "As local MP and president of Hyde United, I am looking forward to taking to the pitch to try to help reverse the club's most famous defeat, and also to raise money for charity. Football is a key part of our national culture, and this game also gives us a chance to celebrate the rich heritage of our national sport."
Mark Hendrick MP replied: “Preston is proud of its historic role in the development of football, which is known all round the world, and is the reason why the National Football Museum is here in the city. I am looking forward to playing my part in a repeat of our famous victory over James and our other friends from Hyde! I am sure everyone will enjoy the day and help to raise money for a good cause – the Sir Tom Finney Alzheimer Appeal.”
Steven Broomhead, NWDA Chief Executive commented: “As the birthplace of professional football, our football heritage is so important to the Northwest region, its culture and its economy. I am delighted to play my part in celebrating this famous game. May the best team win!”
Tony Beard, Director of Football for Hyde United, said: “We jumped at the opportunity to take part. The whole of the club is really looking forward to what should be a great day.”
The game will kick-off at 12 noon on Sunday 18 November. Entrance will cost £5 (£1 concessions). All profits will go to the Sir Tom Finney Alzheimer's Appeal.
