National Football Museum continues to work in partnership with South Africa
The National Football Museum (NFM), Preston , is delighted to be hosting for the second year running, an important South African trainee curator placement funded by the Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS). This is part of a UK government scheme in collaboration with the South African Department of Arts & Culture that commenced in 2005 to encourage cultural links between the two countries.
Fatima Maal arrived in March 2008 and will continue working with the Museum until the end of July. Fatima is a curator for Zakhe Arts in Johannesburg. She is assisting the National Football Museum in a number of programmes for visitors, particularly relating to the current Art of Football exhibition, and later with further exhibitions scheduled for this year. She is also helping to develop plans for a National Football Museum exhibition in South Africa for the FIFA World Cup in 2010 in partnership with a range of organisations in South Africa.
During April the Museum has also been pleased to welcome the visit by Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa, Director of Zakhe Arts. Bongi and Fatima met with NFM Director, Kevin Moore and NFM General Manager, David Pearson to discuss joint plans for 2010.
Fatima said: “I enjoy very much working at the National Football Museum. The staff has been most welcoming, accommodating, and eager to share ideas and transfer skills. Working with families visiting the Museum has become one of my highlights. I am looking forward to helping develop a really exciting exhibition in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.”
Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa added: “I am returning to South Africa committed to taking forward this important partnership. The tournament in 2010 will be a celebration for the whole of Africa and this partnership project with the National Football Museum will create a lasting legacy. An opportunity that cannot be missed!”
