National Football Museum meets National Standards
The National Football Museum has recently been informed that it has achieved “Full Accreditation” status under the Museum Accreditation Scheme of the Museum, Archives and Libraries (MLA) Council.
MLA's Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for UK museums. To qualify, museums must meet clear basic requirements on how they care for and document their collections, how they are governed and managed, and on the information and services they offer to their users. The Museum Registration Scheme was established in 1988, and the National Football Museum was Registered for the first time in 2003. In 2004, the Scheme was renamed Accreditation to better reflect its purpose and the achievements of those museums which meet the standards it sets out. The minimum standards required were raised and the scheme was broadened to include all areas of service provision.
The standards required for national museums are in several areas more exacting than those set for regional and local museums. In particular, the collection must be judged to be of national significance, the museum needs to demonstrate that it has an active research programme and good research facilities, visitor facilities need to be of a higher quality and a programme of temporary exhibitions must be in place. The National Football Museum 's partnership with the International Football Institute at the University of Central Lancashire was an important factor in demonstrating a commitment to research.
Paul Dermody OBE, Chairman of the National Football Museum said: “We are confident that all our services are of a high standard, but it is great to have this confirmed by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. It is particularly important that we have been recognised for meeting the extra requirements for national museums, as the national museum for the national sport.”
Clare Connor, Chief Executive of MLA Northwest, said: “The National Football Museum has gone from strength to strength since it opened in 2001 and is now recognised as one of the leading museum attractions in the region.”
