Sir Howard Newby joins National Football Museum Board
The National Football Museum is delighted to announce that Professor Sir Howard Newby has joined its Board of Trustees from July 2008.
Sir Howard Newby CBE grew up in Derby and is a life-long Derby County fan.
His distinguished academic career in sociology has included professorships at the University of Essex and the University of Wisconsin-Madison .
He has served as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton and of the University of the West England . In August 2001, Sir Howard ended a two-year term as president of Universities UK, the UK body which represents the university sector. He was appointed as the Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council of England (HEFCE) in October 2001.
In 2008 Sir Howard was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool.
Sir Howard was awarded a CBE in 1995 for his services to social science and a knighthood in 2000 for his services to higher education. He is also a member of the Railway Heritage Committee, a trustee of Swindon Steam Railway Museum and a trustee of the National Museum of Science and Industry.
Sir Howard said: “I am delighted to be joining the Board of the National Football Museum at such an exciting time in its development. Football has always played such a fascinating role in English society. I think it is vitally important that this country has a vibrant national museum to document such a key part of our culture.”
