Players from the Past signing session
Some old rivals are due to meet up at the National Football Museum on Friday 31 October. However it isn’t to play football but to sign autographs and pose for the odd photo or two. Ex Bolton Wanderers players are to meet up with ex Preston North End players 120 years after the teams first met at Preston’s Deepdale ground.
The free signing session, open to all visitors, takes place between 1.00pm and 3.00pm. Those confirmed so far include Bolton heroes Roy Greaves, who played nearly 500 matches for the team, John Ritson and John Byrom. North End stars Sammy Taylor, Peter Higham, Eric Jones and Les Dagger, all who played alongside Tom Finney, complete the line up. All the players will be on hand to chat about their playing days and sign programmes, shirts and photographs.
The two teams are both founder members of the football league and Bolton Wanderers were only the second team to visit Deepdale for a league game back in 1888. On that day North End were the winners 3 -1. It wasn’t until their sixth meeting on 15 November 1890 that Bolton recorded a 1 - 0 win over Preston at Pikes Lane.
David Pearson, Museum Manager comments “We've run a number of these signing sessions over the past year and they prove incredibly popular. We always try and having something going on at the museum, especially over the school holidays and these sessions seem to appeal to all our visitors, young and old. It's great that fans appreciate the ex players as much as they do the current ones".
