England’s 1966 World Cup winning ball, currently on display at the National Football Museum, is to return to London for one day only as the star exhibit at a sporting event being held to celebrate St Georges’ Day and England’s World Cup sporting heroes.

Virgin Trains who jointly own the ball with Mirror Group and Eurostar has generously agreed to transport the ball and members of staff by first class travel down to London for the day.

Museum staff will also be taking the shirt worn during the match by 1966 winning team member George Cohen along with other pieces of World Cup memorabilia (courtesy of The Priory Collection). Also on display at the event will be the shirts worn by Martin Peters and Roger Hunt. This is most number of 1966 treasures that have been gathered together since the game more than 40 years ago.

The event, organised by MBN Sporting Promotions will help raise money for the charity Help for Heroes, which supports wounded soldiers. 1966 World Cup heroes Sir Geoff Hurst MBE and Martin Peters MBE will attend, alongside rugby greats Lawrence Dallaglio MBE and Will Greenwood MBE who were part of England’s winning World Cup Rubgy team in 2003.

David Pearson, Museum Manager said ‘It’s great that Virgin Trains have lent their support to this event by helping us to transport the 1966 ball quickly and easily down to London.  The museum is also pleased to be able to support the St Georges’ Day event and the Help for Heroes charity.’
