In partnership with the University of Central Lancashire, the Museum has established the International Football Institute (IFI). The International Football Institute seeks to advance research on all aspects of football, and to make this research available to the widest possible audience, nationally and internationally.
In 2006 the IFI and the National Football Museum successfully bid to the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) under the scheme Collaborate Doctoral Awards. This £50,000 grant award has enabled the appointment of a PhD student, Alex Jackson, to study “Football's Consumer Culture and the Construction of Fan Identities, c. 1880 to c. 1960”. The project will deal with the meanings invested by fans in the products generated by football's consumer culture in this period.
The successful grant application was submitted by Dave Russell, Professor of Cultural History, Department of Humanities, University of Central Lancashire , and Kevin Moore, Museum Director, the National Football Museum .
The PhD student will split their time between the University of Central Lancashire and the National Football Museum , as their project will involve a detailed study of some of the collections held at the Museum. The Museum holds the world's finest collections relating to football, including the FIFA Collection.
A number of major IFI research projects have been completed or are underway. These include:
An evaluation of the Partially Sighted Men's Football World Championships, which took place in Manchester in December 2004.
The first academic study of the role of player's agents in football. A study of issues relating to the recruitment of footballers from the Asian Heritage communities, based at Burnley Football Club.
A three-year research project entitled ‘Football's Consumer Culture and the Construction of Fan Identities, c. 1880 to c. 1960'. This is funded by a grant of £50,000 from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC).
IFI has held two major international academic conferences, including the world's first conference on women's football, ‘Women, Football and Europe ', during the UEFA Euro 2005 Championship.
IFI has produced over fifty publications to date, including acclaimed books by Professor David Russell, Professor John Walton and Professor Graham Kelly. Papers from the 2004 IFI conference have been brought together in the book The Bountiful Game? Football Identities and Finances, published by Meyer and Meyer.
Kevin Moore, Museum Director, the National Football Museum, was appointed as the first Director of the International Football Institute in September 2004.
