The National Football Museum holds the finest and most significant football collection and body of associated evidence in the world. The Museum therefore is committed to researching the collection and related subjects to explain how and why football has become the most popular sport in the world. This is principally achieved through a partnership with the University of Central Lancashire that established the International Football Institute (IFI) in 2003.

The National Football Museum is also working in partnership on research projects with the International Centre for Sport History and Culture at De Montfort University, Leicester, and the Institute of Northern Studies at Leeds Metropolitan University.

The Museum is keen to help everyone that is interested in understanding more about the history and significance of football by:
•  Developing useful resources on this website, in particular suggested Further Reading lists and Fact Sheets on a growing range of topics
•  Developing a network of other Useful Contacts for sources of information
•  Interpreting the collections and football related subjects in an entertaining and informative way through exhibitions, events and activities – see our Education and What's On pages.
•  Directly answering enquiries whenever possible.

One of the most common enquiries we receive relates to people trying to trace information about a member of the family who played football. See our Family History page for some tips.

We will do our best to answer your enquiries, but suggest that you first look at all the reading lists and resources that we provide here to see if they will lead to your answer.
