Football As We Know It

Association Football was developed by ex-public schoolboys and University men, who had the time and money to pursue leisure interests. Club and International football remained the preserve of the upper classes until the 1880s.
This shirt was first worn by Arnold Kirke-Smith in the first official Internation match in 1872. He played for England in the 0-0 in Glasgow, against Scotland. Around that time the basis of the modern game was established.
Arnold Kirke-Smith grew up in Sheffield, where football developed quickly in the 1860s. After leaving Oxford University, for whom he played in the 1873 FA Cup Final, he became a vicar.

The centre piece of the First Half is the FIFA Museum Collection, the finest collection of football memorabilia in the world.
