Football's Origins

Football's origins in the Far East go back at least 2000 years. The game of Kemari was not a rough team sport at all, but a ceremonial display of balance and skill. The object was to keep the ball in the air.

In the Sixteenth century, Renaisance Italy saw the development of another influential version of football. Calcio was played in the squares of cities like Venice and Florence.

Teams of men, dressed in bright costumes, fought out violent contests on festival days. Calcio was ahead of other European games in the development of tactics.

In 1839, Thomas Webster captured the essence of football, a number of years before the Football Association established the rules of the modern game.

A few boys kick the ball about on the village green, with a good deal of physical contact an integral feature.

The centre piece of the First Half is the FIFA Museum Collection, the finest collection of football memorabilia in the world.
