Selling The Game

Preston North End were the first champions of the Football League in 1889. In the same season they won the FA Cup, becoming the first side to win the double.

Manufactured in Preston, this is the oldest board game based on Association Football.

The market for games and toys shows the growing appeal of the sport.

Invented by Mr J Baines of Bradford, 'Baines Cards' illustrate how the game exploded into a national sport. Whilst the early cards featured clubs and individuals throughout the country, cards from the 1880s onwards began to concentrate on the professional clubs on the North and Midlands.

Bought for halfpenny per packet, they enabled fans to show their growing allegiance to specific clubs. Commercial business were quick to promote their products on the back of the cards.

The centre piece of the First Half is the FIFA Museum Collection, the finest collection of football memorabilia in the world.
