Invented by Mr J Baines of Bradford, 'Baines Cards' illustrate how the game exploded into a national sport. Whilst the early cards featured clubs and individuals throughout the country, cards from the 1880s onwards began to concentrate on the professional clubs on the North and Midlands. Bought for halfpenny per packet, they enabled fans to show their growing allegiance to specific clubs. Commercial business were quick to promote their products on the back of the cards. |
