On 6th February 1958, 23 people including eight members of the Manchester United team, were killed in a tragic air disaster in Munich. In memory of the anniversary, the Museum has created a small display of objects from its collection. On board the plane, which crashed shortly after take off from a snowy Munich airport, were a group of Manchester United players forever known as the ‘Busby Babes'. The ‘Busby Babes' were a team of promising young players assembled by manager Matt Busby. They included Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Mark Jones who all died in the crash or as a result of their injuries. Matt Busby and Bobby Charlton were both badly injured but survived. The team were travelling back from their European Cup quarter-final victory over Red Star Belgrade (Crvena Zvezda). Busby and Charlton saw triumph in the European Cup 10 years later.

On display will be poignant and fascinating objects (some pictured above), such as a ticket from Manchester's European game against Redstar Belgrade on 5 February. The match-day programme from the first Manchester United game following the disaster was produced without details of the Manchester United line-up. Manchester United played an emotional FA Cup Final against Bolton on 3 May. Tommy Taylor, who lost his life, was featured on the cover of Buchan's Football Monthly as an emerging star of the time. The Museum is proud to display Taylor's England shirt from a game against Ireland in 1957 where he scored a hattrick. Also included will be a football and photographs signed by the ‘Busby Babes'.
As a further mark of respect the museum will also be asking visitors to observe a minutes silence on 6 February at 3.04pm , the time of the crash.
We also recommend viewing the Manchester United website to find out about some of the events of commemoration planned at Old Trafford www.manutd.com.
Sir Matt Busby, Duncan Edwards and Sir Bobby Charlton all have a rightful place in the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame. The Selection Panel may choose other Busby Babes to join them in the future.
