Picking Sides is a series of paintings featuring  some of the teams, players and managers who’ve left their mark on the history of the English game. This is the Manchester United team that took to the field against Red Star Belgrade on 5th February 1958. It was the second leg of the European Cup, three weeks earlier United had beaten Red Star 2- 1 at Old Trafford. By half time at Stadion JNA a crowd of 55,000 had been silenced as a goal from Dennis Viollet and two from Bobby Charlton had United a three goal lead. Red Star rallied after the break and the game ended in a 3 – 3 draw which was enough to take United to the semi-final 5 – 4 on aggregate. The following day 5 members of the team that played in Belgrade would lose their lives in the Munich Air Disaster alongside 3 other United players and 15 other passengers.
