Football Is Art Calendar

5 April 2019 - 3 November 2019

Footballers have often been described as artists on the pitch, but what happens when the game is depicted as art? Can art in all its forms truly capture the emotions of a match?

Our latest exhibition, Football Is Art, shows how artists have depicted the beauty, drama and passion of our game.

We've selected works from a star-studded line-up of painters, illustrators and sculptors. From Paul Nash to Picasso, George Best to Banksy, the exhibition features household names and hidden gems alike, each one capturing what makes football the game of our lives in their own unique way.

We want those inspired by the exhibition to get stuck in themselves. You can create your very own 3D artworks in the Score Gallery, using the intuitive Google Tilt Brush to bring your vision of the game to life. Can you paint a ball, a shirt or a player in just ten minutes?

We want everyone to experience Football Is Art, so we have commissioned an audio-described tour of the exhibition for our visually impaired and blind visitors. This can be played via the SoundCloud player below on any smartphone or internet-enabled device. The audio-described tour will guide the listener through the exhibition space, describing the artworks and the themes of the exhibition:

Football Is Art is the culmination of a project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to allow the National Football Museum to strengthen its collection of art and sculpture.
