The FA Amateur Cup

The FA Amateur Cup was the most prestigious competition for amateur teams from its founding in 1893 up until 1974, when the FA ended the distinction between amateur and professional clubs. The competition was won by 36 different clubs, the most successful of which were Bishop Auckland of the Northern League, with ten final wins.

My uncle played in the North Shields team that beat Sutton United to win this in 1969. Though you might not think it from the photo – the trophy itself is in an extremely parlous state. When North Shields held negotiations with the FA about allowing the Cup to come north to be part of 40th anniversary events, it was a very delicate decision for everyone involved. The FA very graciously allowed the cup possibly its ever last outing to be part of those celebrations and everyone at North Shields FC was thankful.
